GolinHarris Launches New Greater China Management Structure to Accelerate Regional Growth

As of October 1, GolinHarris will witness the roll-out of a new management structure across the greater China region. The management changes have been put in place to accelerate the expansion of GH in the fast-growing mainland China market, as well as to enhance client service by strengthening resources through a closer alignment with the firm’s other greater China offices in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

John Morgan, currently managing director in Hong Kong, has been promoted to the new position of regional managing director, greater China with overall responsibility for driving GolinHarris’ business in the region. Morgan, a 12-year veteran with the firm who has been based in Hong Kong since 2000, will retain management responsibility for Hong Kong.

“Although our business in mainland China has grown rapidly since we established offices in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing during 2004, Hong Kong remains our flagship office in the region with a strong market reputation, an excellent track record in providing senior strategic counsel and an impressive portfolio of blue-chip multinational and local clients,” said Fred Cook, president and chief executive officer. “We believe our realignment in greater China will better serve the expanding needs of our clients throughout the region, who increasingly demand consistent, high level communications services across borders.”

As part of the new greater China structure, Lydia Lee has been promoted to director, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Lee joined the firm in Shanghai a year ago after extensive business experience in the United States and in her native Taiwan. Lee will have joint responsibility for mainland China with Nikki Lin, who joined the firm in early 2006 as director based in Beijing. Lee and Lin succeed Diane Wu, who is resigning from her position as managing director to pursue other interests.

In Taiwan, Stanley Liu, currently vice president, is being promoted to lead the office as general manager. Liu has almost two decades of marketing and public relations experience and has been with GolinHarris in Taiwan since its formation in 1999. Additionally, Eva Chang, currently director, is being promoted to vice president to support Liu. The new Taiwan management team succeeds Darren Burns, who is transferring to Shanghai to take up a senior position with IPG sister agency Weber Shandwick.

GolinHarris Expands Presence in Southeast Asia

GolinHarris has announced it will be opening an office in Indonesia as part of its ongoing expansion in Southeast Asia.

GolinHarris has already been doing considerable work in Indonesia out of its Singapore office, particularly in the areas of corporate communications, public affairs and issues management, since the firm began operations in Asia Pacific six years ago.

“The addition of an office in Jakarta will greatly expand our client offering in the Asia Pacific region,” stated Fred Cook, president and chief executive officer. “Through expanding client relationships the firm has established a solid brand presence in the Indonesian market, and we now believe the time is right to establish a more active presence on the ground in Jakarta.

“Although a developing nation, Indonesia is the world’s fourth-most populous country, and its market offers significant business opportunities for the firm,” Cook added.

Aligned with the office opening, GolinHarris has announced a number of management promotions. Chitra Rajaram, managing director for the Singapore office, has taken on the new role of regional managing director for Southeast Asia. In addition to Singapore and Indonesia, Rajaram will also manage other markets in the region, including Malaysia.

Mohammad Djohansyah (Johnny) Saleh, currently associate director in the Singapore office, is being promoted to head, Indonesia operations. “Johnny, an Indonesian national, has already spent an extensive amount of his time in Indonesia on client work. In his new role he will be tasked with accelerating the growth of our Indonesian business,” said Rajaram.

David Hutagalung, currently account manager in the Singapore office, is being promoted to associate director. Hutagalung, who is also Indonesian, will continue to be based in Singapore and will play a key role by regularly traveling to Indonesia to develop business with the Jakarta-based team.

Shanghai Snaps Up Second International Award

GH’s creative Zespri campaign has won two major international awards.
The Shanghai team recently won a Golden World Award (GWA) from the International Public Relations Association (IPRA) for its 2005 campaign for Zespri. The GWA trophy joins the Gold Quill award from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) that the team also won earlier in the year for the same campaign.

The IPRA judges chose 21 category winners from 138 finalists out of 323 entries across 41 countries. In Asia Pacific, 28 entries were submitted; GH’s Shanghai office was one of only two winners from the region this year.

“Congratulations to our Shanghai team for winning these two prestigious awards from the IPRA and IABC,” said Fred Cook, president and CEO, GolinHarris. “They not only recognize the great work coming out of our Shanghai office for long-time clients such as Zespri, but also cement GolinHarris’ leading position in the industry.”

Regional Finance Meeting in Hong Kong

At the end of August, the finance team from GolinHarris in Asia Pacific joined their colleagues from IPG sister agencies for the regional finance meeting in Hong Kong.

In the creative industry of public relations, finance teams are often the behind-the-scenes workers, so it was beneficial for these professionals from around Asia Pacific that they could get together for the one-and-a-half-day conference. “The conference was a great opportunity for the group to consolidate, talk about current issues and best practices, address challenges and have some fun getting to know each other,” said Stephen Ashworth, CFO, Asia Pacific.

Special guests from the U.S. included Marty Franken, global CFO and Debra Nichols, senior vice president and global controller.

At the meeting, Andrew Pirie, regional managing director, Asia Pacific, spoke to the group about how finance can best support the managing directors in the region. An outside speaker, Dan Paterson from PriceWaterhouseCoopers in Hong Kong, also presented at the conference.

It was not, however, all “number crunching” at the meeting; Spanish fare was shared among the team at a local restaurant, and Patrick Chan, learning and development director, Asia Pacific, led the group in an interactive game on collaboration that involved risk, trust, teamwork and drama!

The conference is anticipated to be attended by up to 120 CFOs and senior finance executives from a wide range of industries. GolinHarris has been tasked to assist with press releases, media invitations and media interviews.

2006 Asia Pacific Leadership Awards

In September, eight GolinHarris employees from around Asia joined a number of other IPG colleagues at the Asia Pacific Leadership Retreat in Bangkok, Thailand. This year’s two-day conference was held at the new and exclusive Millennium Hilton Hotel.

The Asia Pacific Leadership Awards recognize IPG employees at all levels who have made meaningful contributions towards the collective success of the company. The strict selection criteria involves evaluating which colleagues best exemplify the ethos of leadership in their working environment. The award entrants—from GH and sister agencies—recorded their contributions according to the categories of client leadership, market leadership, workplace leadership and operational leadership.

This year’s retreat involved a welcome dinner, awards ceremony, brand presentations, and a collaboration workshop led by Patrick Chan, learning and development director, Asia Pacific. Malaysia managing director Anne Gabriel also organized a scavenger hunt at the Bangkok flower market that required teams to gather a number of interesting items, beat the clock and be creative all at the same time. “The scavenger hunt was a bit like being on the TV show “The Amazing Race!” one attendee commented.

“I had a great time,” said Kuang-kai Tou, account director from GH in Singapore. “The Leadership Retreat was an eye-opening experience in the sense that all participants showed passion in what they do and an eagerness to learn about other participants' backgrounds, jobs, personal experiences, etc. It was also like we finally found our long-lost brothers/ sisters!”
