GolinHarris Hosts Joint All-Staff Summit Focusing on "Opportunities"

The GolinHarris office in Taipei hosted a summit on April 15 for its entire staff, plus a selection of other Interpublic (IPG) colleagues, focusing on the theme "Opportunity." A total of 42 employees attended the summit, which was held at the world’s tallest building, Taipei 101.

The summit focused on the opportunities for GolinHarris employees in Taiwan, both in the local and regional contexts. Presentations were delivered by several key heads from GH and IPG sister agencies as part of the day’s proceedings. Andrew Pirie, regional managing director - Asia Pacific, commenced the summit with an overview of IPG companies in Asia, which included a presentation of inter-office opportunities.

Following presentations focused on the latest happenings at McCann-Erickson Taiwan and upcoming training opportunities. John Morgan, managing director of the Hong Kong office of GolinHarris also spoke about the niche practice of crisis communications.

Staff participated in a team-building exercise and took advantage of the beautiful weather to travel to the top of Taipei 101 after the summit. The day was wrapped up with a trip to the Indian Beerhouse for dinner and some KTV into the late night, allowing employees time to relax and socialize after an informative day.

The GolinHarris office in Taipei recently won an IABC Gold Quill Award of Excellence in the media relations category for its outstanding "Beefing Up New Zealand in Taiwan" campaign promoting New Zealand Beef.

The team took advantage of a ban on US beef imports to the island, which allowed NZ Beef to claim more than half of the market. As part of the six-month campaign, GolinHarris educated consumers to view NZ Beef as a healthier alternative to other imported beef. Sales of NZ Beef soared 59 percent, taking a 52.4 percent market share. Moreover, prior to 2004, no major retailers in Taiwan sold beef under the NZ Beef brand name. Now, 99 percent of retailers sell NZ Beef.

Remarkably, these accomplishments were the result of a PR-only campaign – no money was spent on advertising.

Recent Media Coverage: David Dodwell and the GolinHarris "Think Tank"

David Dodwell, executive director and public affairs practice head of GolinHarris in Hong Kong David was quoted extensively in an article on crisis communications in Media Magazine.
The Hong Kong office has been receiving positive and prominent media coverage lately due to the efforts of executive director and public affairs practice head David Dodwell.

David and GolinHarris were cited in the March 8 issue of The Economist in an article about the recent resignation of Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa, where GolinHarris was referred to as a "think tank" and David was quoted on the background of Tung’s replacement, former chief secretary Donald Tsang.

In an April 27 letter to the editor of his old paper, The Financial Times, David also responded to perceived cynicism surrounding labor practices at Chinese factories.

David and GolinHarris were also featured in a story about crisis communications in the April 22 issue of Media Magazine, in which David said, "You can’t afford to hang around and think about things, scratch your head and open a crisis manual. You have to be able to move quickly."

David was recently elected vice chairman of the British Chamber in Hong Kong after many years of close involvement in the Chamber. David is also heavily involved in the Hong Kong General Chamber, a director of the Vision 2047 discussion group, and honorary secretary of the Hong Kong Forum, a public policy group affiliated with the New York-based Council on Foreign Relations.
