In the Spotlight: GolinHarris finds itself in a Georgia state of mind

Three new business wins for GolinHarris across Greater China have combined to create an interesting synergy for the three clients—namely because they’re all related to the U.S. state of Georgia:

In Shanghai, GH recently worked with Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines to successfully launch their new Atlanta-Shanghai service.
In Beijing, GH, the Georgia Department of Economic Development and the governor of Georgia, Sonny Perdue, all collaborated for a successful launch of the Beijing Georgia Business Advisory Center and a series of other activities.
And in Hong Kong, GH and the Georgia Ports Authority are promoting the United States’ fastest-growing port to Southern China.

These three pieces of new business show just how fast the relationship between the southeastern United States and Greater China is growing. GolinHarris' role in working with these Georgia clients brings critical synergy and coordination to these engagements—even though, coincidentally, all three accounts were won independently.

The overall objective for all three clients is to build business between Georgia and China. The Beijing Georgia Business Advisory Center aims to help mainland companies learn more about the high-quality investment opportunities in Georgia and to establish a presence in the United States while helping facilitate trade and business.

The new service by Delta Air Lines will facilitate those links while also offering new tourism opportunities, linking Chinese travelers to Delta's extensive U.S. network of services, particularly along the east coast.

Meanwhile, the Georgia Ports Authority is increasingly attracting customers from the Pearl River Delta with its all-water service to the growing southeastern United States marketplace.

GolinHarris' ability to secure these three new accounts and add value through multi-market networking is symbolic of our commitment to always going the extra mile to bring that hallmark strategic thinking to the table.

Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue cuts the ribbon at the new Beijing Georgia Business Advisory Center

Beijing supports the Georgia Department of Economic Development
In an excellent demonstration of collaboration, the Atlanta and Beijing offices of GolinHarris successfully launched a series of events for the U.S. state of Georgia and the governor of Georgia’s first visit to China in early April.

In a competitive pitch referred by GolinHarris’ Atlanta office, Beijing won this significant project: to help the Georgia Department of Economic Development launch a new Beijing Georgia Business Advisory Center and lend support to an array of awareness-building activities centered on the governor's visit. From a lecture at China's prestigious Tsinghua University to a grand gala dinner, the activities were all focused upon building relationships between China and Georgia with the overarching goal of facilitating trade, travel and other activity between the two.

The Beijing team helped the client create solid brand positioning and messaging tailored to a Chinese audience. A major aim was to frame Georgia as a “gateway to the Americas,” both in terms of its strength as a logistical center of the southeastern United States and in terms of economic growth.

The partnership produced superb results. In addition to achieving full attendance at all events, there have been over 40 articles in China's top tier media, television and radio—all positively highlighting key messages and supporting Georgia's brand positioning.

The client was enthusiastic about the outcome. Alison Tyrer, senior communications manager at the Georgia Department of Economic Development, shared, “I can’t thank [GolinHarris] enough for all your help during the governor’s mission last week! … The mission was a big success and one of the most smoothly operated ever."

Lee Macenczak, Delta executive vice president of sales and marketing, speaks to media at the inaugural Atlanta-Shanghai flight

Shanghai supports Delta’s inaugural Atlanta-Shanghai flight
At the close of March 2008, GolinHarris in Shanghai worked with Delta Air Lines to launch its very first flight between Atlanta and Shanghai. The new express route is an important and much needed bridge between the fast-growing southeastern United States and China, as well as a step forward for Delta’s development in China.

To celebrate this milestone, GH helped Delta successfully organize press and consumer events that garnered extensive media exposure by focusing on the new route's significance. A press briefing on March 12 introduced the route and the company to the local media, and numerous celebrations were held on March 31 at Shanghai Pudong Airport, where local dignitaries welcomed the governor of Georgia, Sonny Perdue, as well as Delta executives, and at the Grand Hyatt where 220 guests enjoyed a gala dinner.

Unilever hits the fashion runway in Shanghai

GolinHarris in Shanghai helps Unilever set tasty trends at the “Fusion of Health” Food Fashion Show
GolinHarris in Shanghai welcomed Unilever, one of the biggest wins so far for its ever-growing F&B practice, into the family and hosted its 2008 debut event in April.

Unilever Foodsolutions (UFS) is well-known among chefs and restaurant owners as one of the world’s leading global food service businesses and now aims to expand its brand awareness to the general public. UFS turned to GH to help position itself as an “inspirational business partner” and as a “dining trendsetter” to customers and consumers.

To accomplish this, the Shanghai team conceived of a “Fusion of Health” Food Fashion Show, which would target hundreds of chefs and restaurant owners as well as trade, gourmet, lifestyle and fashion media outlets. The show’s integration of dietary, lifestyle and fashion fads such as the “rainbow diet,” the “Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability” (LOHAS) trend and a high-saturation color palette made for a fantastic feast for the eyes. Brightly outfitted models presented artful dishes, and the designer—the executive chef of UFS—walked the runway at the show’s finale.

Over 200 chefs and 58 media outlets attended, and VIPs in the audience included high-end restaurant owners, gourmet food critics and government officials—one of whom decided to develop a closer partnership with UFS immediately following the show.

Ben Sherman opens its first store in Hong Kong

Bands rock out in Ben Sherman attire during the brand’s grand opening of its first Hong Kong store

The Marketing and Brand Strategy (MBS) team at GolinHarris turned Hong Kong’s world-famous shopping mall, Times Square, into an underground rock show on March 17 when it helped iconic British fashion brand Ben Sherman officially open its first Hong Kong store.

Ben Sherman has long been associated with some of the biggest names in rock ‘n roll, starting when it became the dress of choice for the hugely influential Mod movement of the ‘60s. Bands like the Beatles, The Who and The Jam lived and breathed the brand, and the link between Ben Sherman and rock has lived on through today. So the Hong Kong team brought in four popular local acts—Kubert Leung, Ryan Hui, Climax and Kolor—to ensure that the client got the loud and proud grand opening it deserved. The event combined live performance with a fashion show, an executive speech and even celebrities rolling in on a classic Vespa scooter.

The team also developed a special commemorative notebook for media and the public that paid homage to the brand’s history and fashion. Over HKD 2 million (USD 250,000) in ad value was generated by the resulting coverage, giving Ben Sherman a great opening act to continue pushing the brand’s popularity in Hong Kong.

AgustaWestland flies into Tokyo

Media from around the world attend press conference for AgustaWestland’s office opening in Tokyo

AgustaWestland, a leading helicopter manufacturer operating under the umbrella of Finmeccanica, an Italian defense and aerospace holding company, established its office in Tokyo in early April, with leaders of both companies flying in from Europe.

Following the ceremonial ribbon-cutting event at the brand new office, a press conference was held at the Italian Embassy in Tokyo, located near the GolinHarris office.

GH’s Tokyo team, which has close ties to the aerospace industry and media, assisted AgustaWestland with all media relations activities while also helping coordinate event management with the Italian hosts. The results were spectacular: 36 journalists and industry specialists attended the function, including Italian, British and Japanese media representatives, with considerable coverage gained in all three languages. The event contributed greatly to strengthening AgustaWestland’s foothold in the Japanese market.

GolinHarris serves up a flame cooking TV campaign for Towngas

Celebrity chefs and celebrities on set during GH’s shooting of the Towngas flame cooking TVCs

A PR firm creating and producing television commercials? That’s exactly what the Hong Kong Marketing and Brand Strategy (MBS) team did for Towngas, the leading gas provider and flame cooking expert in the territory. This spring, a total of eight 15-second ads are airing on a major TV station, during previews at Broadway cinemas, and in office building lift lobbies and MTR station plasma screens—all of them promoting flame cooking at home as the best way to prepare delicious, healthy meals.

For the TVC campaign, GH helped to develop the storyboards, arrange casting of actors and guest culinary celebrities, and oversee production of the spots. To generate buzz about the impending launch of the campaign, the team used more “traditional” media relations by alerting target journalists to the TVCs and even inviting them to the shoot.

This winter the team worked to promote the client’s new Web site, www.towngascooking.com, which is dedicated to being the Hong Kong community’s leading source of information about flame cooking at home. Other innovative ideas are in the pipeline for later this year. In 2007 Towngas was convinced of GH’s ability to provide strategic above- and below-the-line services, giving the client the luxury of having a single point of contact for all their outside marketing needs.

GolinHarris takes off with SriLankan Airlines

Traditional Sri Lankan dancers help promote FlySmiLes, SriLankan Airlines’ new frequent flyer program
GolinHarris has been selected as SriLankan Airlines’ public relations agency in Hong Kong, responsible for strategic counsel, media relations and generally raising awareness of the airline and its destinations. To kick off the relationship, SriLankan tasked GolinHarris with generating publicity for the launch of its new frequent flyer program, the aptly named “FlySmiLes.”

Leveraging SriLankan’s presence at the Guangzhou International Travel Fair, one of the most important international travel fairs in the region, GH’s Hong Kong and Guangzhou offices worked together to plan and arrange a media event. With traditional dancers from the Sri Lankan province of Kandy providing entertainment, the event featured a speech from Country Manager Gyan Amerasinghe introducing the airline, its beautiful destinations (Sri Lanka, India and the Maldives) and its new FlySmiLes program to assembled media.

Widely acknowledged as one of the friendliest airlines in the world, the name FlySmiLes captures the essence of SriLankan Airlines. And if the positive coverage generated by the Guangzhou event is an indicator, SriLankan Airlines is certainly making the media smile, too.

A child learns the basics of sailing through the National Olympic Community Sailing Project
The project promotes teamwork and the environment in addition to providing sailing lessons

GolinHarris is sailing toward the Beijing Olympic Games with the National Olympic Community Sailing Project (NOCSP), an NGO in China initiated by China Yachting Business Partnership Ltd., in cooperation with the International Sailing Federation's Connect-to-Sail Program.

The purpose of the NOCSP is to give Chinese youth from all backgrounds an opportunity to learn the sport of sailing. The program is educationally progressive, offering participants important lessons in teamwork, sailing and the process of boat-building, all with an emphasis on promoting a clean marine environment. Various Olympic sailing classes will be held ahead of the 2008 Olympic Games in the port city Qingdao.

China lacks a professional sailing industry, but the NOCSP is hoping to change this by engaging children and their parents through its 2008 NOCSP summer program. GH worked to position sailing as an up-and-coming sport that helps children learn how to achieve balance and develop respect for nature. The Beijing team also helped raise awareness of the NOCSP in the media by organizing a NOCSP Fund Raising Dinner, a NOCSP training course, as well as a sailing trip and visit to the 2008 Shanghai Boat Show.

One of the key programs so far was Top 10 Happy Women, an online vote to recognize women who embody happiness, empowerment, confidence and courage. A press conference announced the winners, who included a bestselling author, a TV anchor and a popular blogger.

Greening Hong Kong with EPS one tree at a time

EPS’s iDo campaign calls for action to protect the environment

In a concrete jungle like urban Hong Kong, leafy green trees are often difficult to find. Recognizing the critical role trees play in both cooling the urban environment and reducing the impact of pollution, leading electronic payment service provider, EPS Company (Hong Kong) Limited, is determined to help "green" the city.

Under its new "iDO" campaign, the company will donate part of the proceeds of each purchase made using EPS to Green Power, a local non-government organization, to plant much-needed trees in densely populated urban areas. To launch the campaign, the company will plant and conserve 2,000 trees and shrubs—the equivalent of a HKD 5 million (almost USD 650,000) donation.

GolinHarris is helping EPS Company generate publicity for its iDO campaign, which features Hong Kong celebrities Charlene Choi, Wyman Wong and Jan Lam. Intensive media relations activities have commenced, generating extensive coverage and helping the company transform Hong Kong one tree at a time.

The Beijing office of GolinHarris won and successfully executed Swire Properties’ first China press conference. During the press conference, Swire Properties announced the establishment of its mainland China headquarters in Beijing, a strategic move for the company’s China business development.

The event represents many “firsts” for Swire Properties in China. Not only was it the company’s first official encounter with mainland Chinese media, it was also their first press event attended by Gordon Ongley, chief executive officer of Swire Properties Mainland China.

The conference, held on May 25 at Beijing Zhongyu Plaza, helped Swire Properties lay the foundation for its future efforts in the China. Media response was excellent, with 47 journalists attending and 121 articles published to date, all positive.

Aspiring future game developers admire works of art by DigiPen students
Jason Chu, chief operating officer of DigiPen Institute of Technology, with prospective students
DigiPen’s first open house in Singapore drew a big turnout of potential students, with the help of the GolinHarris team in Singapore.

DigiPen Institute of Technology, dubbed the “Harvard among joystick-clenching students fresh out of high school” by USA Today, is a world-famous school for the gaming industry and has fostered some of the top game developers in the international gaming arena. The school held its first prospective student event in Singapore on 29 April.

The turnout was twice the number expected, with over 100 potential students in attendance, along with their parents and friends. Together with media reporters, guests were presented with a wealth of information about the school, including aspects of student life and program offerings. Attendees were also invited to try out a showcase of games designed and produced by DigiPen students.

Many had found out about the event from newspaper articles, illustrating the success of GH’s media communications outreach. Prior to the event, GH helped to create buzz by selectively reaching out to news dailies, gaming, IT and teen publications.

The team also directly engaged popular lan-gaming shops in Singapore and with gaming groups on Facebook.com.
