GH in the limelight

Two Asia Pacific Campaigns Win Golin Awards

Each year, the Golin Awards internally recognize the best campaigns throughout the agency's global network. This was a highly competitive year with a record 85 entries, and Asia Pacific offices brought home two winning awards as well as honorable mentions in numerous categories. Here is a summary of the winning campaigns from across the region:

Winner (joint)—Healthcare Campaign
Office: GolinHarris in Taiwan
Client: Merck Sharp and Dohme
Campaign: Captivating Comics: Cervical Cancer Education
The Taiwan government regulates ads for medical treatments, including banning logos or company names on all marketing materials. But that didn’t stop the Taiwan team from creating a winning campaign. They used PR to create an interactive and educational campaign to raise awareness about the connection between HPV and cervical cancer, helping MSD achieve sales figures double its 2006 full-year target.

Winner—Technology Campaign
Office: GolinHarris in Hong Kong
Client: Cisco
Campaign: Expanding Cisco’s Human Network in Hong Kong and Macau
The Hong Kong team was tasked with enhancing awareness of Cisco among corporations, government and end-users as the leader in connecting people via the Internet. The team’s program helped Cisco achieve record sales growth for its recent fiscal year: more than a 30% increase in sales in Hong Kong and a 100% increase in Macau. Delta Air Lines Brings GolinHarris Onboard

Delta’s inaugural flight from Atlanta to Shanghai is scheduled for early next year

GolinHarris has been selected by Delta Air Lines—one of the largest U.S. airlines—as its public relations agency of record for China. GH is charged with providing PR and media relationship counsel, including activity surrounding Delta’s inaugural flight from Atlanta to Shanghai scheduled for early next year*. The account will be led by Lydia Lee, director of the Shanghai office.

“Apart from their exceptional credentials in the airline, travel and leisure space, we clearly resonated well with the team,” said Burt Pinoli, general manager for Greater China, Korea, South East Asia & Pacific for Delta Air Lines. “I am confident that we’ll have a strong partnership with GolinHarris as we extend our global reach into mainland China.”

Bringing together the best talent from Greater China and Atlanta, combined with a creative pitch highlighting the Hong Kong office’s airline expertise, Beijing’s corporate experience and Shanghai’s lifestyle and event management capabilities, GH stood out from three short-listed international public relations firms to win the account.

“Delta Air Lines is one of the foremost global carriers with exceptional leadership and world-class service,” stated John Morgan, regional managing director, Greater China for GolinHarris. “We are looking forward to our partnership with the Delta communications team in China and the U.S. as they embark on this new and exciting business venture in China.”

Keizai Koho Center Visits Chicago and Houston

Carlo Niederberger from the Tokyo office accompanied the delegation to the U.S.

The Keizai Koho Center (KKC)—the Japan Institute for Social and Economic Affairs—is the public relations division of Nippon Keidanren (Japan Business Federation), one of Japan’s major economic organizations.

In recent years, the KKC has organized annual missions to the United States in which representatives of its corporate members visit companies and organizations around the country to learn more about, as well as exchange, ideas and practices in various fields of public relations.

This year’s mission, involving representatives from nine major Japanese companies, took place in Chicago and Houston in late September. GolinHarris hosted study sessions in both cities.

In Chicago, Keith Burton and Dave Duschene introduced the concept of GH’s internal communication specialty practice, Insidedge. GH also organized a panel discussion focusing on internal communications, allowing the Japanese delegation to hear, and exchange information with three notable individuals from CA, the Ragan Report and Northwestern University.

Furthermore, our founder Al Golin, assisted by Nicola Moore, arranged for the delegation to visit McDonald’s headquarters in nearby Oak Brook. McDonald’s executives shared their insight on crisis communications and the group took a guided tour of Hamburger University.

In Houston, Jeff Beringer gave an informative presentation on digital PR trends, examining the role of new media. Afterward, Stephanie Augenthaler facilitated a visit to Texas Instruments, another key GH client, where the delegates listened to IT experts talk about how global employee relations are successfully handled.

Since its inception in 1978, the KKC has pursued its key goal of bridging the gaps in communication between Japan’s private sector and other sectors in society, both domestic and international, helping connect individuals, communities and organizations in Japan and around the world.

GH, which shares the same value of global connectivity as exemplified by the rapid expansion of its international network—especially in Asia Pacific—was honored to host the KKC and its corporate delegates.

Liu Discusses the Corporate Ladder and PR 2.0

Liu shares his experience with future professionals in Taiwan’s leading career magazine

Stanley Liu, general manager of GolinHarris in Taipei, gave fresh graduates advice on starting their careers off on the right foot in a recent issue of Cheers, Taiwan’s leading career magazine.

Liu stressed that while ambition is a great motivator for success, diligence and hard work are the most important for working one’s way to the top. He warned against unrealistic expectations, using the PR industry as an example: How can one expect to become a successful PR consultant by skipping over the fundamental skills of vendor liaison and client service?

Also, Liu explained more about “PR 2.0” in a recent issue of Adm, Taiwan’s leading marketing magazine. In the age of Web 2.0, an Internet-inspired business revolution has changed the relationship between marketers and consumers. Liu called on PR professionals in this new era to manage consumers’ expectations and engage in advocacy.

On Your Marks, Get Set, Go!

GH team members support the fundraising event
There were a few sore legs in the Sydney office after GolinHarris team members walked/ran in support of their client, the Oncology Children’s Foundation, as part of the annual JPMorgan Chase Corporate Challenge.

Amongst the 7,678 runners, GH team members clocked in an average time of 50 minutes. On the other hand, their team captain—and client—clocked in at 26.29 min … and he’s over 50-years-old! The winner ran it 16 minutes. But well done to the GH team for pushing their way through the pack.

“I was at the finish line to see our red-faced GH representatives run down the home stretch, and in true PR style the three of them had a clipboard and mobile phone in hand,” said account director Jo Osorio.

The most outstanding result was for the client—JPMorgan Chase raised $30,000 for the Oncology Children’s Foundation through the event. Now, the office has already started exercising in preparation for next year.

Asia Leaders Land in Penang for Awards

In September, seven of GolinHarris’ up-and-coming leaders joined a contingent of IPG colleagues at the Asia Pacific Leadership Awards Conference. The annual event was this year held in warm, sunny Penang, Malaysia.

For two days, the team participated in a series of group exercises, which included the development and presentation of an integrated communication strategy, and discussions on leadership. Guiding the group was a panel of IPG leaders including two from GH: Andrew Pirie, managing director, Asia Pacific, and Dr. Chitra Rajaram, managing director, Southeast Asia.

Later, at the conclusion of the conference, an awards dinner was held at the well-known Eastern & Oriental Hotel to celebrate and acknowledge the achievements of all attendees.
