Greater China benefits from recent promotions

CT Hew, recently promoted to vice chairman
John Morgan, recently promoted to managing director of GolinHarris in Hong Kong
Following the recent expansion initiatives of GolinHarris in Greater China, CT Hew has recently been promoted to vice chairman and John Morgan, previously deputy managing director, has been promoted to succeed Hew as managing director of Hong Kong. The promotions are designed to capture opportunities for existing and potential clients operating in the region. Both appointments are effective January 1, 2005.

Hew's position is a newly created senior management role, responsible for client service and development initiatives across Greater China.

Hew has served as managing director of GolinHarris in Hong Kong since 2001. Prior to joining GolinHarris, he was president – Greater China and managing partner of Scotchbrook-BSMG Worldwide, before that firm’s merger with GolinHarris. He previously spent 21 years with BursonMarsteller, serving as managing director of the firm’s Malaysian operations, regional director for South-East Asia, and president-Asia.

“CT is one of the most accomplished and well-respected communications professionals in Asia Pacific with nearly 30 years experience across all disciplines of public relations,” said Fred Cook, president and chief executive officer. “As Vice Chairman, he will be at the forefront of our client service and development initiatives as GolinHarris continues to expand its reach throughout Greater China. Promoting John Morgan to the managing director will ensure that our office in Hong Kong continues to be well positioned to service both local and global clients.”

As vice chairman, CT will foster further collaboration with other Interpublic Group companies within the region, Cook added.

In John Morgan's new role as managing director, he will be responsible for day-to-day management of GolinHarris in Hong Kong.

“A ten-year GolinHarris veteran, John joined the Hong Kong office in 2000 when the firm began its expansion into Asia Pacific and was promoted to deputy managing director in early 2004. John’s track record in both the Asian and North American regions will be key to ensuring the Hong Kong office continues to service effectively its award-winning roster of local, regional and global clients. He will work closely with the Hong Kong office’s senior team of communications professionals, including vice chairman CT Hew, non-executive chairman Anne Forrest, and executive director David Dodwell.”

John joined the Washington, D.C. office of GolinHarris in 1994 as vice president, responsible for managing the office’s marketing communications practice. Prior to joining GolinHarris, John was based in New York City where he served in corporate and agency positions managing communications strategies for leading global entertainment companies in cable television and home entertainment.

New Branding Launch Showcase

The New GH brand and logo has officially launched throughout the world. The new brandmark is a symbol that represents the idea of one common belief, one solid pact to the values that are inherent to the culture at GolinHarris. The gold seal is a reflection of the dedication to honest, heartfelt client relationships, bold break-through thinking, and a personal commitment to the work that is vital to impacting client business.

In Asia, the new GH debuted at the 2004 Asia Pacific PR Awards, held at the Grand Ballroom of the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, where GolinHarris was an event sponsor and category sponsor for the "Crisis Management" award. The new GH logo was prominently displayed on vertical backdrops and large video screens throughout the evening—the perfect complement to the dawn of the New GH when GolinHarris took home three prizes, including the coveted "Gold Campaign of the Year" award. Building Spirits While Building a Home: GolinHarris Collaborate to Help a Family in Need

Baxter Jolly, Managing Director of GolinHarris in Singapore and Andrew Pirie, Regional Managing Director Asia Pacific, GolinHarris join forces to build the walls of the house
The team with house partner Togap and his family
Togap is a scrap metal collector in Batu Aji, Batam, Indonesia, earning slightly more than US$100 a month. He currently lives in a dilapidated shed with his wife Ida and daughter Marta. This is not uncommon on the island of Batam, Indonesia, where many of the local people are unable to obtain a decent house due to the cost. Being able to own a home would be a dream come true for Togap and his family.

This dream is slowly becoming a reality. Colleagues from GolinHarris, Weber Shandwick and FutureBrand in Singapore have joined forces to build a house in Batam, as part of the regional Habitat for Humanity "1000-House Campaign." The first of two home-building teams recently returned from a three-day trip to lay the foundations for a 35 sq m (388 sq feet) brick house, complete with internal plumbing.

Habitat for Humanity (HFH) is a non-profit organization that seeks to eliminate poverty housing worldwide by partnering with corporations and interest groups to build decent and affordable houses for needy families in countries around the world. Eighteen colleagues from GolinHarris and Weber Shandwick are building one of the 60 HFH houses slated for construction in Dapur Dua Belas, Batu Aji, Batam, during the month of November.

The three firms are sponsoring the cost of construction materials and staff expenses (including travel, food and accommodation) and staff have also personally contributed to the cause.

It was hard work for all involved but well worth it to help the many families in need. "This was a good experience for all of us. There were a lot of things to be done and only by working collectively as a team that progress was made. We hope to participate in future projects with Habitat for Humanity," said Sahala Sianipar, Director, GolinHarris Singapore.

Oliver Gritz, CFO of DHL Asia Pacific (second from left) at the Tenth South Asia CFO Roundtable in Singapore.

GolinHarris worked together with The Economist Group, the world’s leading source of analysis of international business and world affairs, to handle pro-bono media relations projects for two recent events. GH in Singapore handled the media relations for the Tenth South Asia Chief Financial Officers’ Roundtable, by Economist Conferences in Singapore. Similarly, GH in Hong Kong was appointed the official public relations agency for the Economist Corporate Network’s Regional Strategic Forecast: Baton Changes in Hong Kong.

For the roundtable, GH leveraged existing client relationships and helped secure CFOs from Bank Mandiri and DHL Asia Pacific as speakers. Extending our cooperative efforts within the Interpublic Group, GH arranged a speaking appointment for Dr Joanna Seddon, Executive Vice President – Worldwide Strategy, FutureBrand, and secured an interview for her with prominent local business publication, The Edge Singapore. Regarding the event in Hong Kong, GH in Hong Kong developed and implemented a PR plan, as well as managed media relations onsite, resulting in extensive coverage from two major Hong Kong dailies and Chinese print and broadcast media.

The partnership with The Economist Group was very successful. Attended by top-level executives from various industries, both events helped garner greater visibility for the GH brand.
