Spirits While Building a Home: GolinHarris Collaborate to Help
a Family in Need |

family |
Togap is a scrap metal collector in Batu Aji,
Batam, Indonesia, earning slightly more than US$100 a month. He currently
lives in a dilapidated shed with his wife Ida and daughter Marta.
This is not uncommon on the island of Batam, Indonesia, where many
of the local people are unable to obtain a decent house due to the
cost. Being able to own a home would be a dream come true for Togap
and his family.
This dream is slowly becoming a reality. Colleagues from GolinHarris,
Weber Shandwick and FutureBrand in Singapore have joined forces to
build a house in Batam, as part of the regional Habitat for Humanity
"1000-House Campaign." The first of two home-building teams
recently returned from a three-day trip to lay the foundations for
a 35 sq m (388 sq feet) brick house, complete with internal plumbing.
Habitat for Humanity (HFH) is a non-profit organization that seeks
to eliminate poverty housing worldwide by partnering with corporations
and interest groups to build decent and affordable houses for needy
families in countries around the world. Eighteen colleagues from GolinHarris
and Weber Shandwick are building one of the 60 HFH houses slated for
construction in Dapur Dua Belas, Batu Aji, Batam, during the month
of November.
The three firms are sponsoring the cost of construction materials
and staff expenses (including travel, food and accommodation) and
staff have also personally contributed to the cause.
It was hard work for all involved but well worth it to help the many
families in need. "This was a good experience for all of us.
There were a lot of things to be done and only by working collectively
as a team that progress was made. We hope to participate in future
projects with Habitat for Humanity," said Sahala Sianipar, Director,
GolinHarris Singapore.

leading source of analysis of international business and world affairs,
to handle pro-bono media relations projects for two recent events.
GH in Singapore handled the media relations for the Tenth South
Asia Chief Financial Officers Roundtable, by Economist Conferences
