Summer 2008
Fred Cook

Thank you for visiting the Summer 2008 edition of Breakthrough, GolinHarris’ Asia Pacific newsletter.

It’s difficult to write a welcome note for this particular issue without acknowledging the tragic earthquake which struck Western China on May 12. Our hearts and condolences go out to the people of China during this extremely difficult time.

Although I am based in Chicago, I did happen to be in China during the earthquake. I was attending the GolinHarris Greater China Leadership Summit in Shanghai. Although many kilometers away from the epicentre, I did experience this event first-hand with our Greater China office and practice leaders. In only moments, our Blackberrys and PDAs began to communicate the tragic news. I am very thankful that our agency's staff and all of our family members are safe.

I’m proud to add that GH joined other PR agencies in partnering with the Chinese International Public Relations Association to contribute to the relief efforts. Our offices also observed a moment of silence during the three days of national mourning which began one week after the quake struck.

Although we are all somehow still impacted by this tragedy, it’s important that our lives and our businesses go on. And, with that, I will now introduce this quarter’s newsletter.

This issue is yet another strong presentation of our growth and accomplishments throughout the region. The articles you’ll find here are just a glimpse into the energy, expertise and creativity that characterize GH in Asia Pacific.

At GH, the strengths of our teams are applied not just to win a client—but to forge powerful relationships with our partners. For example, in Beijing, what started as a one-time project for Swire Properties’ first media event in China has evolved into a long-term partnership. In Singapore, our team transitioned seamlessly from an intensive pitch for McDonald’s to immediately supporting activities the company’s newest initiatives. And in Hong Kong, our team worked in concert with long-time partner, Cotton Council International, to produce the second fashion calendar in a row to garner international accolades—the 2008 “Life Journeys” calendar, which recently won an IPRA Golden World Award.

We’ve built a culture of success across the global GH network with the energy of people who care and relationships that last. Thanks, as always, to our clients, partners and colleagues for the support that makes our continued growth possible in the Asia Pacific region.
